Lorene Lambert ('72) given Phoenix Award

Lorene Cook Lambert ('72) was presented with the 2012 Volunteer Friend Phoenix Award on February 16, 2012, by the Healing Arts Project, Inc. (formerly the Middle Tennessee Mental Health & Substance Abuse Coalition). Phoenix Awards are presented annually to those individuals and agencies who have assisted or promoted programs of recovery for persons successfully participating in healing from mental illnesses or substance abuse. Lambert's award comes after seven years of coordinating the annual Art for Awareness, an event that honors consumer artists in recovery who are using art as a pathway to success. Each year, Art for Awareness, co-sponsored by the Healing Arts Project, Inc. (HAPI) and the Tennessee Department of Mental Health (TDMH),holds an exhibition of consumer work at the Legislative Plaza and distributes art supplies to the registered artists to encourage them to continue in recovery programs. Among the artists who participate, a few are professionals, but many others have never touched a pencil or brush to canvas until they enrolled in a peer support center art class. Now, some are selling their work. Lambert is TDMH's Publication Editor in the Office of Communications. She has served in this capacity for the last seven years. Prior to that she was a travel writer and publication editor and designer for the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. She has been a state employee for 34 years.Lambert is a recent cancer survivor, and in 2008 was trained for Lay Ministry by the Presbyterian Church USA. Cookie is finally getting the recognition she has duly earned. She was a real leader back in our Belmont days and is one of my oldest and dearest friends. She is one tough "cookie" in her fight with cancer and has always been one of the great, truly great people to have graduated from Belmont! Love, Lance.
