Many Broadway fans were watching The Tony Awards to see former Belmont student Matthew "Levi" Kreis win!  Levi won the Tony for his portrayal of singer Jerry Lee Lewis in the hit Broadway musical, "Million Dollar Quartet." His category was Best Featured Actor in a Musical.   "The cast... (are) competent actors, even better musicians," wrote an Associated Press reviewer. "Levi Kreis stands out as Jerry Lee Lewis, not so much for capturing the rock 'n' roller's essence but for his own amazing piano playing."

Levi has been playing the piano since age 5, according to his parents. He played piano and sang gospel music at area churches during his youth. After graduating from Mount Pisgah Christian Academy, he attended Vanderbilt University and Belmont University in Nashville, performing at Opryland in "I Hear America Singing."   He then traveled to Los Angeles to work. He played Roger in the national tour of "Rent" in 1997 and had roles in the films, "Don't Let Go," and "Frailty." An award-winning singer, he has released three albums, including, "Where I Belong," which was released last year.
