Belmont Women's Basketball is saddened by the loss of Alfreta Peterson Johnson ("Pete") who passed away on Nov. 6 at her home in Jackson, Miss. Johnson was a member of the inaugural Bruins team in 1968-69.

"Pete played a huge role in building this program and we cannot thank her enough for the path she paved," head coach Bart Brooks said. "We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones; she will be missed."

She will be laid to rest Friday in her hometown of Mound Bayou, Miss. She is survived by her daughter, two sons and two grandchildren.

"It was difficult to process this news of Pete's death and then convey the message to all her teammates.  We all loved our Pete," said Betty Wiseman, founder of the women's basketball program at Belmont and coach of the inaugural team. "Belmont Athletics honored these women on the 50th Anniversary two years ago, and again the following year at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet as the Legendary Team. I am so pleased that we all had this time together, especially since the untimely death of Pete."

Johnson came to Belmont as a 15-year-old high school graduate. She walked into Striplin Gymnasium in the summer of 1968 and worked out for Wiseman and her staff.

"Right there, on the spot, I put her through a workout and bingo – she was in," Wiseman said. "There were no NCAA rules back then.  Pete soon endeared herself to her teammates and the entire campus from the point guard position at 5-foot-4."

After receiving her degree at Belmont in Social Work, she went on to pursue her master's degree at the University of Tennessee. She became a long-time social worker in her home state of Mississippi.

"We extend our sympathy to her family and remain grateful for Pete's impact in our lives and on this program," Wiseman said. "Pete left her mark on Belmont Women's basketball and in the hearts of her coach and teammates."
