Don Hammons (1968) Passes Away

Bro. Don Hammons passed from this life on Sunday morning, July 8, 2018 at his home in Medon, TN. A native of Hardeman County, he lived most all of his life here except for short time in Missouri and in Georgia. The son of the late Lucian Ivo Hammons and Eldis Park Barnes Hammons, he was a 1958 graduate of Bolivar Central High School. Bro. Don received his BA from Belmont University and his MA from Union University. He also attended Baptist Seminary in Kansas City. He was a long-time minister serving Oak Grove Baptist Church (Moscow, TN), First Baptist Church (Thomaston, GA), First Baptist Church (Whiteville, TN), and 31 years at Mt. Olive Baptist Church (District 15 area of Fayette County). He also had been an interim minister for several local congregations. In addition to his work as a minister for 62 years, Bro. Hammons was a Rural Mail Carrier for over 25 years and was a college teacher. In his leisure time, he enjoyed chopping wood, cutting grass and bird watching. A positive and fun-loving guy, he was famous for his ability to tell and pass along jokes to everyone he knew. He deeply loved his family, his grandchildren and above all, his Lord and His Church.

He leaves as his survivors, his wife of 28 years, Nancy Hammons, whom he married on February 10, 1990; four sons, Donald Dean Hammons, Jr. of Bradenton, FL, Brian Duane Hammons of Medon, Brent Dudley Hammons of Avon Park, FL and Bradley Welburn Hammons and wife, Kimberly (ne'e Bible) of Hernando, MS; step-son, Donald Williams and wife, Wendy (ne'e Hackett) of Murfreesboro, TN; two sisters, Dorothy Ehrett of Pinson, TN and Linda McClure of Slayden, MS; four brothers, Jasper Hammons and wife, Shirley, of Bartlett, TN, Marc Hammons of Bolivar, Gene Hammons and wife, Emily, of Bolivar, and Ray Hammons and wife, Wanda of Whiteville; twelve grandchildren, Jasmine Carman, Braden Hammons, Cheznie Clark, Carson Hammons, Bentley Hammons, Ethan Weaver, Cody Kelly, Cody Hammons, Kaleigh Hammons, Chastity Kelly, Bella Williams and Branden Holden; and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Neola Chisholm; and two brothers, Roger Hammons and John Paul Hammons.
