Rev. Bert L. Walker, Jr., Class of 1992, Passes Away

Rev. Bert Walker Jr. entered the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, August 5, 2017, unexpectedly at his home in Sylvan Township near Evart. He was 57. Bert was born May 20 in Lansing to Cebert and Evelyn (Gibson) Walker. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1978. Bert married Melody Schonert on August 11, 1984, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Evart. He graduated from Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan, in 1982 with an associate's degree in nursing. He worked in the nursing field in multiple areas, including the ICU, CCU, ER, OR, psychiatric, research, and poison control center. He returned to school in Nashville, TN, graduating from Belmont University in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in biology, where his research was published in the Tennessee Journal of Science. He continued his educational path after answering a call from God to serve people. He obtained a master's degree of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Bert served God as a pastor in Indiana, South Carolina, and Michigan. He then changed his ministry course when he found what he referred to his as his true passion in serving and caring for people as a hospice nurse. He considered it an honor and privilege to care for those in their final journey and was currently employed with Spectrum Health Hospice in Big Rapids. Bert had a love for life, family, friends, and God. He loved unconditionally and wanted to be known as an encourager to those around him. He loved learning, teaching, entertaining, cooking, hunting, riding his motorcycle, spending time thinking, watching nature, looking at the stars, watching the sun rise and set. He often said life and death to him was a win situation because "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Bert is survived by his wife Melody of Evart. His children, who were his pride and joy, Jacob of Paris, Caleb (Alyssa) of Kalamazoo, and Abby of Evart, a sister, Doris of Arizona, as well as many friends that felt more like family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carole Strong. Funeral services for Rev. Bert Louis Walker Jr. will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 12, at Crossroads Community Church in Evart with Rev. Bob Weeks and Rev. Paul Weissenborn officiating. Visitation will take place Friday, August 11, at the Corey Funeral Home 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Noon Saturday until time of services at the church. Interment will be in Sylvan Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for his daughter's future education.
