Anne Lindgren Jay ('48) died on July 15, 2011, in Wyomissing, PA at the age of 82. She was the daughter of the late Orton William Lindgren and Hazel (Palmer) Lindgren and the wife of Wendell Thomas (Tom) Jay Jr., who died on July 20, 2008. From 1990 until 2007, she spent winters at Bray's Island Plantation in South Carolina with her husband.
Anne attended the Stewart School in Reading, PA prior to attending National Cathedral School in Washington, DC, from which she graduated in 1946. She then attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, TN, graduating in 1948 with a degree in early education. She briefly taught kindergarten at the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts and was a swim instructor for the Red Cross in Reading before marrying Tom Jay in 1950.
She and Tom had three children: Wendy (Jay) Hilburn of New York, NY; Susan (Jay) Kirby of Philadelphia, PA; and Thomas L. Jay of Rockville, MD. She is survived by her children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Orton William Lindgren Jr. of Wernersville, PA. She was predeceased by her sister Jane Florence Lindgren of Lancaster, PA, and brother Richard Palmer Lindgren of Chester Springs, PA.
Anne was a devoted member of Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing and very active in the life of the Church. For many years, she was an avid golfer and outdoor enthusiast. She enjoyed horseback riding and excelled at trap and skeet shooting. She was a Girl Scout leader for her daughters' troop and was particularly skilled at camp crafts.
One of Anne's most enjoyable moments was on March 20, 2008 when 15h seed Belmont University almost beat Duke in the first round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Her husband, Tom, a Duke graduate, always bragged how great Duke basketball was. However, this was one moment in time when Anne could say Belmont was the tougher team and Duke was just lucky to have won. A point Tom could not disagree with.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Anne Lindgren Jay to Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610. Memorial services will be Saturday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church.
Henninger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
