Mrs. Vesta Firestone Weese, age 90, died peacefully on December 16, 2010, surrounded by her children. A native of Akron, Ohio, Vesta was the only child of Nicholas Firestone and Rhea Miller Firestone. She attended Ward Belmont College and Connecticut College, graduating with a B.A. in English.
Following graduation, Vesta moved to New York City where she was the executive secretary to the Senior Vice President of IBM for eight years before marrying and retiring from the work world to raise three children in the suburbs of Chicago. In 1973, Vesta moved back to New York, her first love, settling on Long Island where she returned to work as the office manager of a family owned insurance brokerage. She was a resident of Huntington, New York for 34 years, and was active in St. John’s Episcopal Church and a volunteer at Huntington Hospital for many years. She moved to Durham, North Carolina in 2007.
Vesta was a sweet, loving woman to whom people were automatically drawn. She is survived by three children: Lucinda Weese of Durham, Angela Weese of Park City, Utah, and Walt Darson of Huntington, New York. In keeping with Vesta’s love and support of the natural world and all of its creatures, memorial donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy or the ASPCA.
