Back to School...

Posted By Administration, Monday, November 16, 2009
I could be in school for the rest of my life. And by that I mean...I love school. I enjoy learning and the adventure of uncovering things I did not know. Perhaps this explains why I am back at Belmont as a Graduate student. Either that, or I just wanted a new, hip, t-shirt. But really.....

For the past three years, I have been working in a private school working as a Pre-K teacher. It has been a challenging, but rewarding, learning experience. However, I have always wanted to take this culture of excellence so often found in private institution, to the public arena. I have also longed to go further with my own education. I graduated from Belmont in 2005 with a BA in Religion, Christian Education. As I explored my call to teach and inspire, I found myself looking at changing schools and starting a graduate program.

As I was considering where to study Education and Teaching, I was looking for a place that was on the edge of all that is going on in Metro Nashville Schools. After being a teacher for 3 years in a private school, I knew that I was being led to offer excellent education to children in other areas of town, and in the school system. This led me to look in to Belmont, and the New Teacher Project.  The New Teacher Project seeks to provide teachers for high need schools in order to close achievement gaps and create a culture of educational excellence. This summer, Belmont partnered with Nashville Teaching Fellows and the New Teacher Project to bring over 80 teachers to high need schools in Nashville. This partnership means that Belmont is the school where these teachers are practicing and perfecting their craft. We are in a cohort of 12-15 other teachers who meet for classes twice a week. We are learning how to be better teachers. We are getting a certificate to teach in either Pre-K-3, K-6, 4-8, or 7-12. There are Math, Science, Spanish, Elementary, English, ELL, and Social Studies teachers. There are also Exceptional educators. As an Elementary teacher, my cohort is in a literacy class as well as a Science and Math methods class. We also have one-on-one mentors that reach out to us during the school year to help make our first year in public school, a great one.

The New Teacher Project and the Graduate program at Belmont have allowed me to go into a public school, and face challenges and rewards of the public school system. They have also allowed me to return to a place that I loved so much as an undergraduate student. And...did I mention I bought a new Belmont shirt? I couldn't resist...

In Jesse Weaver’s '03 post last week, he noted that Belmont University has made some impressive strides over the past ten years.  Like Jesse, I began at Belmont in the fall of 1999, and there is an astonishing difference between the Belmont of 1999 and the Belmont of 2009.  The addition of a College of Law just further evinces that point.

When I was trying to decide where to attend law school, I would have loved the opportunity to enroll in the Belmont J.D. program.  What Alumni wouldn’t want three more years at BU?!  Unfortunately, at that time, the Belmont University College of Law was not a viable option.  For anyone who possesses an interest in the law but no J.D., however, it is not too late to consider what the College of Law can do for you.  Regardless of whether a law related career is not attractive to you, or if you already have one J.D. and are not interested in three more years of law school, perhaps you would consider giving to the College of Law.  Click here for more information on giving to the Belmont University College of Law.

To the Top...

To the Top…

…That’s where Belmont has been headed.  Since I first stepped foot on campus my freshman year in 1999, to today, Belmont has undergone some incredible changes.  The student body has increased more than 50%.  The school has added amazing facilities for it’s students, staff and alums.  The business school became accredited.  We hosted the presidential debate.  Our athletics continue to get national attention…the list goes on and on and on…  The reward has been Belmont’s ability to break into the rankings of top universities, and in turn, an increased value of the diploma that everyone remembers walking away with.

These accomplishments have been made possible by not only the wonderful faculty and staff of the university but also the commitment by alums around the globe to continually share their support for the university through participation at events and commitment to giving back.  As a way of support, not everyone still lives in Nashville and can go to the amazing programming put together by the Young Alumni Council, but regardless of where you live, you will be able to support the school’s continued movement in the rankings by participating in annual giving.

As a finance alum, I didn’t believe it when I was first educated on how the giving really effects the schools progression in the rankings.  I naturally assumed, that if I didn’t have $1.0 million to give, that my gift wouldn’t be enough to even “move the dial” with the university.  When I was told that the rankings focus more the alumni percentage of giving (the number of givers rather than the value of their gifts), I was shocked!  The gist of the story is whether you are able to give $1 or $1 million, you still count as 1 alumni giver, and the more givers we have as a percentage of our alumni base, the more progress we make in the rankings and more valuable your DIPLOMA becomes!  (moral: it’s not what you give, but that you give)

(Here comes the part where I speak “finance” and relate how annual gifts to the university make good investment sense)  As Belmont continues to excel on a national level, the diploma from the university will open more doors in all of our careers.  On average, these doors will lead to higher wage earning opportunities that will undoubtedly justify your commitment to give.

If you’ve kept your contact information up-to-date with the school, you’ve probably recently received a phone call from students taking part in the annual giving campaign.  My guess is that you might have screened the call because it wasn’t a number stored in your phone.  If you did answer the phone, I hope that you were able to contribute to the “To the Top” cause by making a gift.  However, if you didn’t receive a call or happened to miss the call, you still have the opportunity to make your contribution through the website (CLICK HERE).

The school, its alum and students have done some amazing things.  Let’s keep the momentum going for the next ten years by showing our support in pushing our school to the top.

A Memorable Move-in Day

Posted By Administration, Monday, October 26, 2009

Dan Oliver '06 spoke about Opening Day in his post back in August and I wanted to say a little something about my experience this year! I signed up to volunteer before I was appointed to the Young Alumni Council so I wasn't able to join the YAC group that day (although I was able to rock my YAC t-shirt!) I volunteered for a double shift which amounted to roughly 5 hours of up and down, up and down, up and down stairs and I LOVED every second of it.

This was Belmont's largest Opening Day and 500 volunteers took part in moving in Belmont's largest freshman class to date. Not only did current Belmont students, student organizations, athletic groups, and alumni pitch in but also members of the Nashville community. The looks on the faces of the freshman and their parents when they pulled in front of the dorm and were told to pop the trunk and stay put in their seats were priceless! It took a few seconds to comprehend that the 20 or so people converging on their vehicle were going to move them in and they wouldn't need to lift a finger (until it came to unpacking that is!) While the families parked the car and the student checked-in with their Resident Advisor, the volunteers carried mini-refrigerators, mattress pads, guitar cases, boxes, suitcases, and assorted necessities to the student's room. By the time the student got to their room for the first time their stuff was waiting for them!

It was sweet to see the proud parents and the nervous and excited freshman and very cool to witness roommates meeting for the first time. I remember meeting my roommate in the lobby of Wright/Maddox 9 years ago and despite the geographic distance between us we are still dear friends! It was an honor to meet incoming freshman and their families and get to talk a bit about my experiences at Belmont from August 2000 through December 2003. They were interested in YAC, intrigued by my career in the music business, and SO eager to begin this new chapter in their lives.

This will definitely be an event I take part in for years to come!

Lasting Friendships

Posted By Administration, Monday, October 19, 2009

Renease, Brittani & Shandra

Being a Belmont Alum is GREAT!!  It is so great because you make such long lasting relationships and friendships.  This past weekend, Renease Perkins '07 and Shandra West '07, visited me in Oxford, MS where I attend law school.  It was a great time.  I met Renease my senior year in high school when we both came to Belmont to interview for the Hearst scholarship and from there we have been the best of friends.  Shandra and I met the first week of orientation and realized that we live on the same floor in Kennedy Hall.  It was great for them to come and visit me in Oxford.  I was able to expose them to my life in law school and the Ole Miss culture.  There was a big football game that weekend where Ole Miss played Alabama.  Lots of Ole Miss and Alabama fans in town!  We went to "the grove" which is typical Ole Miss football culture and then a night on the town square.  It is great to share your life after Belmont with friends from Belmont.  It was also great to catch up on life with one another and we had a blast the entire weekend.  They were definitely exposed to small town Mississippi, SEC football, and my life as a law school student (especially when they saw my, according to them, boring looking law school books) ;)!!!  I love them dearly!!  Its a great when your college friends want to come and spend time with you where you are in your life now.  I believe Belmont helps foster these types of relationships and friendships to continue!!

Staying Connected through SIFE

Posted By Administration, Monday, October 12, 2009

Last Thursday, I had the exciting opportunity to visit Belmont’s campus and spend some time with the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team.  We had a Business Advisory Board meeting in Massey to get an update on upcoming SIFE projects, goals, connections, and needs.  It was fantastic!

It had been about six months since I stepped onto campus so it took me by surprise to find another building rising from the ground.  As usual, Belmont is in growth mode and continues to expand campus resources through classroom space and resident halls.  And, of course, we cannot forget the most recent announcement: the Belmont University College of Law.

SIFE is student-run campus organization that partners with non-profits in the Nashville community to help strengthen, organize, and expand their impact on the community.  SIFE has also grown over the last six months, nearly doubling in its student members.  The purpose is clearer than ever: to promote positive change in the lives of its student members and community partners.  Their impact this year is likely to surpass all others by leaps and bounds and I’m ecstatic to be counted as an alumni partner.  As a partner, I get the unique opportunity to be a liaison between the non-profits in the Nashville community and the Belmont students that participate in the program.  It’s truly a great opportunity to give back in a significant way to both the Belmont and the new community we’ve joined upon graduation.

I hope you too will find a way to stay connected to Belmont, either through a professor, organization or as a mentor to a current student.  The possibilities are endless and the reward is great!

What's For Dinner?

Posted By Administration, Monday, October 05, 2009
What’s for dinner? Or more importantly…Where are we going to eat at?  If you are like me you often find yourself struggling to decide where to go.  We often find ourselves frequenting the same places day in and day out.

Two recent Belmont grads are trying to break out of their restaurant dining shells.  Ben Palos (2007) and Traci Goldenberg (2009) have set out to dine at Nashville’s local and unique restaurants that we often forget about or do not consider.

Ben writes: “Tracy and I are going to visit a locally-owned restaurant in Nashville once a week that neither of us have visited before. The trick is that every week the restaurant has to begin with each subsequent letter of the alphabet, starting with "A" until we reach "Z."

You can follow Ben and Traci on their blog as they eat their way through the alphabet.  So far the pair have tried The Acorn, Batter’d & Fried & Caesar's Ristorante Italiano.

After each dining experience the pair reports back their findings and scores each restaurant based on: Price, Location, Food Quality, Drink Quality, Service and Ambiance.  You can check at their blog at http://alphabedibleadventures.blogspot.com/or follow them on twitter http://twitter.com/alphabedible.

I look forward to trying their discoveries and as Ben put it, “answering the question that always seems to stump us--"Where are we going for dinner?"

Greek Life

Ten years ago I moved onto Belmont’s campus with no intention of joining Greek life, but after meeting the some of the amazing women in Belmont’s sororities, I decided to pledge Phi Mu my freshman year.  Phi Mu became a huge part of my college experience allowing me to take on leadership roles and form life-long friendships with women who I might not have otherwise met through classes or other campus activities.  As an alumna, I enjoy participating in Nashville area Phi Mu events where I continue to meet sisters who graduated years before and after me.

During my collegiate years in Phi Mu, I participated in fall recruitment as a chapter member and as recruitment counselor (Rho Gamma).  Now as an alumna, I have the opportunity to experience this exciting time of year from yet another perspective as an alumnae volunteer.  It was very rewarding to see how my chapter has grown and to see the enthusiasm of the chapter members as they prepared to meet potential new members and thanked alumnae for their help.   I would encourage alumnae to participate in next year’s recruitment.  It’s a great opportunity to visit campus, catch up with friends and meet your collegiate sisters!

Congratulations to Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Sigma Tau and Phi Mu on your success in this year’s fall recruitment!   On Bid Day, each chapter welcomed 32 new pledges!

Also, a warm welcome to Sarah Rochford, Belmont’s new Greek advisor.  Thank you for your hard work making this year’s recruitment so successful!

Alumni Showcase & Young Alumni Fall Social

Posted By Administration, Monday, September 21, 2009
Adam York '02
I have always heard people say, "Time flies when you're having fun!", and what a true statement this has been for me since my time at Belmont. While attending the Alumni Showcase this weekend, I had one of those moments of reflection where I realized just how wonderful (yet short) our college days are.  I was amazed at the talent and turnout for the 2nd annual Alumni Showcase featuring alumni artists Brittini Black [2003], Shirock (Chuck & Pap Shirock [2004], Adam Gatchel [2006], Derek Blank [2008], and Ricky Braddy [2007].  This showcase was extra special for me since I attended Belmont with 3 of the artists.  In fact, I remember seeing Brittini Black perform in several showcases as a student.  I am so proud of these alumni and their accomplishments.  Even more, I am proud to be an alum of Belmont!

After the showcase, more than 100 young alumni and friends met together at Mafiaoza's for our Fall Social. It's always fun to re-connect with old friends and catch up on life.  Even better, everyone seems to enjoy meeting other young alumni from previous or latter years. (And the free pizza is always a plus...haha!)  The attendance at our socials is growing, so you definitely do not want to miss the next one (Homecoming-Feb. 27, 2010!)  Also, congratulations to Clint Fields '03 for winning the door prize, a $25 gift card to Mafiaoza's!

As always, thanks to Kelly Fish and the Alumni office team for always putting together such great events.  I can't wait until the next one!

Blessings,

Adam York '02
